Part II of Hitting The Golf Ball From Uneven Lies

OK, here is part II in this series on hitting from uneven lies. We started with the shot many call "the hardest shot in golf" last time so for this part of the series we move to a golf shot that is quite a bit easier, when the ball is above your feet on an level lie. Golfers can still mess this one up, but it is relatively easy to make.

The first thing to remember in this shot is that the shot is going to draw, moving from right to left. So be sure to aim left of where you want the shot to end up.

Now from here, like a lot of my golf tips, my advice is not conventional. That is because a lot of my students and newsletter subscribers just aren't comfortable trying to execute the mechanics of the "perfect" golf shot in all situations. So if you are a low handicapper you may not only disagree with what follows, but you don't want to try it.

As you might expect, you will need to stand much more upright in your stance for this golf shot. The ball is higher than your feet so you will have a tendency to hit the shot fat if you don't stand up more. You may or may not want to choke up on the golf club a little. You will be able to tell if you need to do this after trying this shot a few times. If you make decent contact, but still hit the golf ball a little fat, then choke up just a little.

Now, in addition to standing more upright, I recommend that you don't bend your knees. Just basically stand straight up which will feel very different for a golf swing.

You will have a tendency to swing the golf club very much like a baseball or softball bat. A little of this is ok, but if you swing the club completely around your body, you could end up hitting the ball very far left and possibly with a big hook. For most amateurs, I recommend controlling this by stopping your follow through when the golf club is pointing down the line of your shot.

Just swing through the ball until your club points down that line and don't bring it over your shoulder like you do in a normal follow through. This may sound a little crazy but if you have any struggles with the shots where the golf ball lies above your feet, give this a try. It does work.

Good golfing until next time.
