US Open: Did Tiger win the golf tournament or did Rocco lose it?
Certainly this year's US Open provided quite a show for golf fans, just as Rocco Mediate said right after his heartbreaking loss to Tiger Woods on Monday. But after 91 grueling holes, I've seen some debate about whether Tiger stepped up and won this golf tournament or Rocco just let it get away. Which is it? Possibly both and possibly neither. No I am not trying wimp out of this one. Read on golfers to see what I mean.
Tiger, appearing to be an almost mortal golfer as he limped around on his bad knee. Rocco, missing short putts that were real chances to seal the victory. It appeared to me that both golfers were trying to give it away. And then both golfers refused to die and go away to let the other one grab the victory.
To me, as a golfer and a golf fan, it was probably one of the most enjoyable two days of watching golf this Sunday and Monday. I'm not sure much work actually got accomplished in corporate America yesterday, but maybe that's not all bad. With all the scandals and all the cynicism around pro sports these days, seeing these two golfers fight their heart out was pretty awesome in my opinion. And seeing a 45 year old guy who has never won a major golf tournament go toe to toe with Tiger and not back down was pretty cool too.
So while it wasn't the greatest display of precision golf or domination or even consistent par golf, it was enjoyable and, I believe, refreshing for the average golfer. There is no doubt about Tiger's greatness. But I've always loved golf and there are a lot of reasons why. One of them is that as a competition, it can be a great leveler.
The handicap system lets us compete with golfers who are much better than us. And golf tournaments and the way the golf ball bounces can give us drama like the 2008 US Open. That is just one of the great things about the game of golf. I hope that you got to watch it and enjoy it.
