How can I stop hitting fat golf shots with my irons?
I hit my golf irons very fat all the time. I hit the driver and fairway woods with decent contact and distance, but most of my iron shots seem to take a huge divot and pop up and don’t go very far. Any golf tips to help me with this problem?
The most consistant source of this problem is not necessarily with your golf swing specifically. It is more with hitting behind the golf ball with your golf irons. You are really hitting more ground than you are ball. I read about a great golf tip to help you work on this and I have used it in the past.
Next time you are at the driving range, mark you golf ball by putting a tee even from your golf ball, but about 1 inch outside it. Hit your normal golf shot and then compare your divot to where the tee is. You will probably see that the golf club made contact with the ground behind the tee. This shows that you are definitely hitting way behind the ball.
Keep working this drill and add this step. Concentrate on hitting down (not too steeply) on the back of the golf ball. My teaching pro actually told me to pick a particular dimple to keep my eye on. Combining this with the golf tee in the ground helped me with this problem early in my amateur “golf career”
Hitting irons can be a challenge in many ways. I’ve got more golf tips if you struggle with other iron problems.

If you want to stop chunking or hitting it fat try to hit the ball then the ground.TRY to put your club face on top of the golf ball.TRy this and it worked.I did this and i got better in golf and shot 68 on 18 holes

what do you mean by puttingh the club on top of the ball?
thanks

cool
When you say to try to put your club face on top of the ball, I can’t picture what you mean. Do you mean pretend you are going to hit above the ball or pretend you are going to hit the ball straight into the ground? Thanks.

It seems that even when I place the ball BACK in my stance, I still hit it fat. I generally have good hand-eye coordination, but for some reason I hit it fat no matter what.
I also slice my driver. I’m a lefty. Many will say that being a lefty is my only problem.

I mean that the golf ball is on the ground and just go up to the ball when ur about to hit then instead of trying to put it on the ground put it right above the ball.Try just to hit the ball concentrate of hitting the ball or try this drill>>
go to the concrete and swing the club u feel that u dont want to hit the concrete or else u will brake ur club so try swinging on the concrete and it sould work?? peace????? =]

incomplete wrist hinge at the top without any leverage. hinge your wrist early, you will release the club a bit later and the ball will fly.

I am not taken a divot after the ball.

Im having a major problem with hitting fat shots. I could hit 20 excellent shots in a row and then hit 2 or more fat shots in a row, and cant figure out why because the swing feels exactly the same as the good shots. Its making me mental! I watch the pros almost every weekend, like most of us trying to pick up any free tips we can get. But i think mostly i watch and pray that one day just one time ill see a pro hit a fat shot. Well gotta go wash my clubs off, just got home from ripping up the range.

Often what’s happening when someone hits an iron shot fat is that they’re swaying backward or putting too much weight on their back foot on the takeaway. On the backswing, stack your weight over your forward side. Concentrate on keeping your lower body, and especially your head, as still as possible as your arms rotate around your body on both the back and downswing. Keep your head still all the way through impact – don’t tilt back or you’ll actually end up hitting thin.

I’ve noticed that the reason I hit the golf ball fat is because I haven’t shifted my weight to my front side ahead of the club making impact with ball.
Comment by J Smith on 3 April 2010:
Dave, Thats the key. The fat shot is commonly caused by an improper weight shift starting the down swing. A good key to help those hitting it fat. Start the downswing by shifting your weight to the left side, let the hands fall. This will shallow out your plane and get your head right behind/on the ball at impact.

i used to have a huge problem chunking the ball. my problem was that i was dipping my body during my swing. now i just focus on keeping my body at the same height throughout my swing. don’t focus on power at all just try not to dip and make solid contact and you will be fine.
Comment by Ryan on 24 June 2010:
Ya matt i have the exact same problem, just when i turn instead of dip i pull it….

I can commiserate with those of you hitting fat shots. I am a 2 handicap and the other day I was sitting at 2 under on the last hole. I hit my second shot fat, and now the more I try to fix it my fat shots are getting worse!!!
No matter what I try ( and I know a lot about the golf swing)I can’t seem to fix it. This game will drive you to drink.

try looking at this link on Video Jug – it goes through each potential reaon for hitting ‘fat’ shots, good luck.

i found that if i move my hands in closer to my body and swing a controlled speed, my drives are strait as an arrow and if i am too far 1 way or the other it is just a small draw or fade which will still allow you to be in the fairway

IF you hit the ball fat check swing path.
it will be either a steep fat
or a shallow fat.
try to keep your hands between your shoulders at the top. 3/4 swing at first.

to much wait on your back foot! try putting a ball under your back foot directly in the middle of your foot and have it stick out half way so that your foot is slightly elevated and take some swings.
Comment by TheAnswer on 30 April 2011:
I tend to hit fat shots under pressure. I believe my problems stem from swaying my body instead of turning it.
Proper ball position, keeping the spine angle the same (not moving up and down) and turning crisply should solve any issues with fat shots. My experiences say most fat shots come from the player not accelerating thru the shot or from not swinging within themselves. But I don’t think people looking for answers on why they are hitting fat shots are trying to mash the ball to the moon. At least I hope not.
Comment by joe mansell on 4 May 2011:
When you set up to the ball try looking at the front of the ball instead of the back of the ball.this will trick your brain to hit at that spot connecting with the back of the ball first. PGA apprentice

The main cause of hitting fat shots is not in the weight shift, most people are athletic enough to do that properly. The cause is coming over the top, which puts you on a steep swing path that bottoms out behind the ball. Keep your wrist cocked until your hands get to the ball. Do not release early.

try laying a tee on ground a half inch in front of golf ball, try and hit the tee with your club, this will make you hit down on the ball and take the divot in front of the ball. this worked very well for me
Comment by UtahFriday on 25 December 2011:
The cure for fat iron shots is this:
1/ Set up standing tall, let your arms hang relaxed and position the ball so that the club can not touch the ground three inches behind the ball.
2/ Square up back foot so that the backswing does not create a sway and put you in a position where you cannot move through the shot.
3/ Keep your weight on the balls of your feet, not your heels.
4/ Swing THROUGH the shot with more (slightly) grip pressure in your leading hand.
Enjoy!
