So golfers looking for Part II of tracking your golf stats, stay tuned. My next post will finish that article. But for now I wanted to touch base on the US Open starting tomorrow. A lot of speculation on who will contend for this year’s second major. And of course all the golf media is talking about Tiger’s chances. But here are a few thoughts….First, to get the Tiger conversation out of the way first. I don’t think Tiger will be a factor. My brief thoughts are inconsistency and competition. Tiger just isn’t ready yet. He hasn’t been consistent enough and his victories haven’t come against the big guns. Enough said.
For me, I like several golfers to do well. I believe Rickie Fowler will do well, but not be in the hunt on Sunday. Close but needs a little more trial under fire in the majors. I like Rory. He has had a lot of distractions since last year’s success, but showing up last week tells me he gets it and may be refocused. I also like Dustin Johnson to contend, coming back from his injury.
This is going to probably be one of the hardest golf course set ups in recent US Opens and that will make it a very tough tournament for all of the pros. Justin Rose is in the top 20 in driving accuracy this year and tied for first for top 10 finishes. He could make a run. Matt Kuchar is first in scoring average and also doing well in top 10 finishes.
Looking at the year, my gut tells me it won’t be a Mickelson, Tiger, or even this year’s Masters champ, Bubba Watson. I’m looking for a first time winner to drop the winning putt on 18 on Sunday. Everything I’ve seen and read also says that the winning score could be above par this year. So I think it will be a fun golf tournament to watch from a golfing fan’s perspective.
I look forward to hearing from all of you Golf Nuts out there on who you like. Catch me on Twitter with your predictions.
