A consistent putting stroke

Something that I learned a few years back that really helped my putting stroke can cut a fair number of strokes off your golf game. I wanted to share this simple putting tip to help you improve your short game and your golf game overall.

This is helpful if you find yourself pulling and pushing a lot of putts and just don’t feel that you are putting the golf ball consistently.
Grab a couple of small pieces of wood about 8 inches long. 1×2 furring strips are ideal for this. Take these, your putter, and some golf balls and head to the putting green.
You want to line up the two pieces of wood in front of where you will take your stance pointing in the direction you are going to putt. Leave them far enough apart that your putter head has about a half inch clearance on either side. These two pieces of wood will form an alley that your putter head and the golf ball will travel down.
Practice putts from 3 to 10 feet in length and concentrate on taking the putter back straight and following through the golf ball straight as well. The object is not to make contact with the wood during your putting stroke.
Now I know that a lot of the teaching “pros” don’t advocate straight back and straight through. But what I have found with myself and with other amateur golfers is that if you are very inconsistent, pulling then pushing your putts, this approach can really help you get the putter moving in a consistent direction and making your direction control a lot more accurate on the green.
Give it a try and see if you don’t cut some strokes off your golf game! If you have been struggling with your putting, click here for more putting tips.
