American golfers and the Ryder Cup
Well it’s almost time for the biannual Ryder Cup competition between “America’s Best” golfers and the golfing professionals from Europe. Europe has spanked the US 5 of the last 6 times. Why are the US golfers continuing to struggle in this event?
There are probably many golf writers hitting the keyboards as you read this with both their predictions about this years’ golf competition as well as complete explanations for America’s failure to be more competitive in this event. Or maybe Europe’s domination is a better way to describe it.
I’m not sure that this golf amateur known as “The Golf Nut” has the answers. I still struggle to hit the golf ball consistently and try to keep my handicap at a respectable level. So I’m not sure that I have the answer to why Europe keeps spanking us at golf every two years.
One thing that strikes me however is that I haven’t seen any US golfer or golfers step up and really take charge of the Ryder Cup matches. While we have some tremendous golfers (Tiger, Mickelson, Furyk, I could go on), none of them, in my opinion, has shown the leadership and drive in regards to the Ryder Cup that I would hope to see. I question if they are bringing the same focus and intensity to these competitions that they bring to each of the four golf majors each year.
Why is that? Is golf too much an individual sport? Are these guys unwilling to hang it all out there when they have to rely on someone else? Are the American golfers too spoiled? I think that I have more questions than answers, but until someone figures this out, I think that we will continue to lose much more often than we win against the Europeans.
