Can you help me with my golf swing, particularly hitting the driver?
Golf Nut, my golf swing is making me crazy. I am very inconsistent hitting my driver. I hit my three wood great and feel really comfortable with it. I do pretty well with the irons. But with the driver….one drive may go great with a pretty little draw and the next will be wild or a big slice or hook. When I swing the driver, I feel like I am getting jammed and can’t bring it down to my side and swing through from the inside like I know that I should. Any helpful hints?
Well there are a lot of things that can cause problems with the full golf swing and the driver in particular. Your best bet would probably be lessons or at least letting a golf professional look at your swing if you haven’t already.
However, here is one easy and cheap thing you might want to try. A friend of mine had a similar problem with his golf swing where he said that it felt like the driver was too long for him. It felt like he was going to jam the driver into the ground a lot of times. I don’t believe that the club was too long because he’s about 6 feet tall, but for whatever reason, he was having similar problems.
If you have an expensive driver and still have your old one around, you will want to try this idea with the old one first. Or buy a cheap driver from Wal-Mart or Sam’s before you do this on a $300 or $400 golf club. What he did was have a 3 wood shaft put on the driver. A simple thing, but he saw immediate results.
Now he doesn’t hit the driver perfect every time, but he is a lot more consistent off the tee and says that he feels much more comfortable swinging the driver. As a result, he actually shaved a few strokes off his handicap. Sometimes simple is best with golf, don’t overthink it!
