Custom Fit or Off the Shelf Golf Clubs?

I am considering buying a complete new set of golf clubs. My question is should I buy off the shelf or get a custom fitting from my club pro and buy from him at the pro shop?

You didn’t indicate your experience level, so I will answer this question with my standard recommendations for golf club purchases.
New Golfers ( 0 experience to 2 years/Average score 95 to 105+)—Whether this is your first or second set of clubs, I recommend a used set of name brand, but off the shelf clubs. You can find these at retail stores like Play It Again Sports, on Ebay, or at online sites like callawaypreowned.com or golfbidder.co.uk. And by the way, Callaway Pre-Owned also sells other brands that they received in trade-ins. There are many places you can find used brand name clubs, but my key point is this: If you are going to be playing a lot of golf, don’t scrimp and pay $85 at the Wal-Mart. You can find a good set of clubs, many times for between $200 and $600 for an entire set (which can be for a set that costs between $1,000 and $1,600 new). You don’t want to spend too much money at this point, but a set of quality clubs can help make you feel more comfortable over the ball. Contrary to what some will tell you (especially your spouse), I believe that the clubs can make this difference and that translates into a better golf swing.
Experienced Golfers (Average score 85 to 95)—This is usually when I recommend golfers step up to a custom fitted set of quality clubs. Whether you buy these from a retailer who fits you or your local pro many times is simply a matter of whether you have a relationship with the pro at your local club. If you do, many times they can come pretty close to what you pay at local golf warehouses and you get huge brownie points for the purchase. This can translate into better deals on lessons and/or other merchandise. If you don’t belong to a club or have a relationship with the pro, many of the bigger golf stores now have great places to hit the clubs right in the store and/or may have loaners that you can take to try on the course. The key here is to take your time and get it right. This is one of the bigger investments you will have made in your game to this point and, again, the right clubs make all the difference in allowing you to relax (at least as much as can while playing this crazy game). Don’t be in a hurry, the worst thing that can happen is that the clubs are put on sale!
Lower Handicap Golfers ( Average score below 85)—The truth is you know what you want in a set of golf clubs and don’t need advice from me on this!

  1. So, can you really find a decent set of golf clubs on eBay? I have never used eBay and I hate to admit it, but it’s true.
I am a little concerned about getting ripped off. That is why I have never bought very much, especially golf clubs online.
I would appreciate any comments that you have on buying golf clubs online, especially at eBay.
    Mark,

  2. Mark,
I have bought and sold golf clubs on eBay and it has always been a good experience. I am amazed at the variety of new and used clubs that you can find.
And eBay has been established for a long time as a safe place to buy. They have dispute resolution measures and other pieces in place to rid themselves of fraudulent sellers.
I encourage you to check it out if you are thinking about buying used golf clubs.

  3. Mark,
I don’t know about Ebay but, I’ve bought clubs through TourEdge and through Golfsmith.com

Like you, I’ve read and seen TV and video on a lot of horror stories of people buying off Ebay only to find a club they thought was a Taylormade was actually a look alike that was mfg in China to look exactly like a Taylormade driver. I would never pay out hundreds if not thousands of dollars on clubs unless the site was well known and you know who your buying from. At Ebay, you’re taking a big risk buying from someone you don’t know.

  4. I have fairly new set of Taylor Made clubs with titlest wedges, The pro I work with has shown me what custom clubs can do for my game. He fits Henry Griffitts. I can definately see the improvement immediately. My question is they will cost about 3K. Should I consider the investment or another brand as I’m not familiar with these. It also after reading other articles seems to be a bit expensive. As I am a student that is with a discount included. Also, I bought although new my clubs after research on ebay and had no problems and saved a bunch over the pro shops.
