Golf's New Master's Champion: Who is Zach Johnson?
I know fellow golf nuts, I need to get back to golf tips and golf rules, but around major golf tournament time, please bear with me when something strikes me to write about. I am very intrigued by this new champion, Zach Johnson. Here is a 31 year old golfer, maybe the closest thing to the rest of us amatuers that exists on the pro tour, and poof, he wins his first major and he's a celebrity.
So Johnson won a pile of money, appeared on Letterman, and, by the way, moved from number 56 to number 15 in the World Rankings of golfers. So what does the future hold for him? Well, before we discuss that, I'd like to discuss the young man himself for a moment.
One of the things that I already like about him is that he just seems to be a humble, down to earth guy. Not a prima dona golfer who feels that he is owed attention and awe. Of course it probably is easy to be humble when you have won only one other golf tournament prior to this past week. But Johnson doesn't strike me that way. I think that what you see is what you get. The question is, will that change?
I am sure that his agent's phone is ringing off the hook. And that putter of his, the SeeMore, is probably going to see a spike in sales. But I really don't think any of this will change the Masters Champ from Iowa. He seems grounded and describes himself as a "simple man". And I believe him. Which may be his downfall.
Well, Zach probably needs to get ready because life is not going to be simple any longer. And while I like his style and demeanor, I don't predict great things for Mr. Johnson. I think that he deserved the victory in Augusta. And he deserves the fame for the win. He handled a really tough golf course under really tough conditions. But I don't believe, looking at his stats and his career to date, that he will suddenly blossom into a consistent "Tiger Beater".
But that is the wonderful thing about this game of golf. On any give day, any giver golfer..... And, yes, I will be back to golf tips and rules and other stuff like that in the next edition.
