Has the money in golf gotten too crazy
I read in February where Tiger Woods is projected to hit $1 billion in earnings by the year 2010. Now, there is now doubt that Tiger is the exception to just about everything in the world of golf. But when you start looking at the money that these pro golfers are making, it makes your head spin.
I saw the Golf Digest list of top earners for 2005. This was a list of the top 50 professional golfers, male and female, showing total on and off course income. Now off course income includes everything from endorsements, appearance fees, golf book and golf apparel sales, to golf course design fees.
Now when I see the names like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Annika Sorenstam on this list with total earnings over $8 million, that makes some kind of weird sense to me. But then I see Tim Clark, Angel Cabrera, and K.J. Choi showing up with total earnings over $3 million and I wonder if the game of golf has gone crazy? I mean, I know that all of these guys hit the golf ball way better than I ever will. But are they $3 million dollar golfers?
Then take a look at the price for golf vacation packages to places like St. Andrews. Or even what it costs to go on a Myrtle Beach golf trip!! Where will it end. I don’t know, I am nuts about golf, but sometimes I think that the golfing world has gone nuts.
