Hitting my golf shots on the toe of my golf clubs
Golf Nut I am hitting about 90% of my shots on the toe of my irons. I don’t know what has caused this to start happening and I am sure that there is a simple cure for this. Can you help me?
Well, the most common cause of hitting golf shots off of the toe of you golf clubs is standing too far away from the golf ball. This almost seems too simple, but I would advise this as the first thing to check.
Sometimes it is easy to start moving back in your stance without even realizing it. So first thing I would recommend is go to the driving range and check your stance and distance from the golf ball. Even if it feels like you are the right distance, try moving slightly closer to the ball and see if it makes a difference. If it does, use something to mark the distance so that you can have a reminder until you are consistently addressing the golf ball from the same spot.
Another potential cause of this could be that you are not getting a good shoulder turn during your golf swing and really swinging the golf club more up and down. Sometimes this is caused by the thought of keeping the club straight down the target line. Remember that a consistent golf swing really approaches the golf ball from the inside.
To practice getting a good shoulder turn try this. Find a hill or bank near your house or driving range. Put the golf ball on the bank and practice a golf swing. It will almost feel like a baseball swing at this point because the ball is above your feet. Try hitting the golf ball a few times. It probably won’t be a great golf swing, but don’t worry about it. Then go back to flat ground and as a part of your pre-shot routine, swing the golf club like the ball is still on the hill or on a big baseball tee ball stand. Feel how your shoulder turns. Now take a normal practice swing but remember to turn that shoulder. See if this helps you make more solid contact in the center of the head of the golf club.
Without seeing your golf swing, those are the two most common causes that I am aware of that might be causing this problem. If all else fails, go let a teaching pro take a look at your golf swing. He might immediately spot something that you are doing. But if you don't want to pay for expensive lessons, here are some more useful golf tips that I have put together. Good luck.
