Is a putter with no grip against the rules of golf?
Golf Nut, I had my golf clubs re-gripped and was fooling around with my putter before it was finished and liked it without the grip. I decided to try it out on the golf course the next day and loved it. Someone at the clubhouse said that it was against the rules. Is this true?
While it is unusual to play with any golf club that doesn’t have a grip, a grip is not required. The rules of golf allow and suggest a grip, but it is not required.
An interesting note on putters. Putters can actually have two grips, with one of the requirements being that they must be separated by 1.5 inches. I’m not sure why you would want two grips on a putter except for maybe one of those extra long putters.
Now, while not required, I would strongly suggest that you have grips on the rest of your golf clubs. I play golf mostly in very warm weather in the South and I have trouble sometimes holding on to my golf clubs even with grips.
Anyway, interesting question and I’ve never seen a golfer putt without a grip, but you are allowed to “have at it”.
Can you change the face of a putter?
That is, can you fix a piece of tape, such as masking tape or other material to the face of the putter?
Today there're a lot of putters that have plastic and material inserts into the face of the putter.
Or can you machine grooves into the putter?
Finally, what can you do to the face of a putter that is within the rules?
please advise.
Thanks,
Ivan.
