Is Michelle Wie going to end up as a young golfer out of control?

I apologize in advance because I had intended to answer a couple of questions this morning with some golf swing advice. But I was reading and saw a small piece on Michelle Wie in Sports Illustrated and just could not help myself. I really have wanted to see this young golfer do well, but is someone (her Dad or agent) sending her down a dangerous road to wearing the label of "spoiled young golfer".

First, most of you golf fans probably saw or read where she pulled out of the recent golf tournament hosted by Annika Sorenstam, The Ginn Tribute. If you were paying attention, you knew that she withdrew while fourteen over par, saying that her left wrist was really bothering her. She said that is was not because she was really getting close to shooting an 88 or worse, a score that would have disqualified her under LPGA rules from any tour events for the remainder of the golf season.

But then she shows up two days later practicing at Bulle Rock, the site of the next tour event. Pro golfers in the LPGA are not allowed to practice at a tour site until the previous week's tournament is over. Since she is not officially a member of the tour, the rule did not techically apply to her, but still this is starting to border on ridiculous. And, apparently, some of her fellow golfers felt the same way. Sorenstam said that her actions showed "a lack of respect and class". And she was probably also referring to some of the bad behavor that she displayed during the pro-am that Monday at Bulle Rock.

So here is a promising teenager with loads of talent for swinging a golf club. But I am wondering if she is misguided or being misguided. It's hard to tell these days. There have been other incidents in the past, but you could have written those off to youth or lack of experience or maturity. But at this point in her career, I think it's time for Wie to show maturity and class or she may be in for a long road as a professional golfer.

In my personal opinion, I think we will have an accurate picture of who the real Michelle Wie is in 12 months or less. I am interested to find out what the answer is.

Having watched with disapproval the careers of Jimmie Connors and John McEnroe (sp?) and their "spoiled brat antics," I don't think it will hurt Michelle's career too much to be a spoiled brat, so long as she can start delivering on her talent.

When I was a kid (I'm 73 now) the fashion . . . almost the unwritten law among sports heroes, was to put on an act of humility to show how noble they were about their talent. That ended with Cassius Clay/Muhamed Ali running around screaming, "I am the Greatest!" and then backing it up.

Now when John Daly signs up for a tournament, it increases the gate big-time, and probably improves beer sales as well. The days of acting humble are past and that is probably a more honest way . . . but I still miss them.

Blessings - Chuck
