Is Tiger in fact the best golfer of all time?
Tiger Woods won a golf tournament for the fifth straight time this weekend and continued the roll that has propelled him to two majors this year and well over $7 million in tour earnings so far. Questions about whether he will break Byron Nelson’s record of 11 straight wins and whether he is the best golfer ever are starting to pop up now.
I believe, without a shadow of a doubt that Tiger is a great golfer. And I also think that he will be considered one of the best of all time. But I believe that it’s a little early to label him with “THE BEST EVER” tag.
I’m not attempting to belittle or take away from what Tiger has accomplished in his golf career. I just think that we need to let him finish his career and see what he accomplishes over the total of his entire career on the golf course. Then we can compare him to Nelson, Nicklaus, Jones, etc. And I think he will come out very high if not on top.
I read an article today that went ahead and gave him the crown, title, and closed the book. But my point is, what if he decides next month to give up golf and establish a foundation in honor of his dad and devote all of his time and energy to that? And that would be an awesome thing. But that is just one example of why I think we can wait a little while before we do all the comparisons that are bound to happen eventually.
Good luck Tiger and I hope that, if you do establish that foundation, it’s after a long and tremendous career as one of the best professional golfers of all time.
