Is Tiger the best golfer of all time?

Tiger Woods took control of the PGA Championship golf tournament Friday with a record tying 63 and closed in typical Tiger fashion on the golf course Sunday. He now has 13 victories in golf's majors and is really starting to zero in on the record of 18 held by the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus. Is Tiger better than Jack, and is he the best of all time?

I didn't grow up playing golf, I learned as an adult, so Nicklaus was in the twilight of his great career when I really started to follow the game. But he immediately was the golfer that I idolized and I pulled for him every time he played. There is no doubt that Jack is a legend and one of the all time greats in the game of golf.

Many would say that you can't answer the questions that I've asked because A.) Tiger hasn't caught Jack yet and B.) his golf career isn't over yet. There are also those who say that answering the question of who is the greatest golfer of all time is impossible because it is so hard to compare those that played in different generations.

But in watching Tiger the last few years, I can't help but ask the questions. He is the only truly dominant golfer that I have watched from the beginning of his career. And this guy is just so good! Let's first compare Tiger and The Bear first.

From a numbers perspective, Tiger won his 13th major championship this past weekend in his 44th major golf tournament. Nicklaus won his 13th in his 53rd major start. So you could say that he is ahead of Jack's pace so to speak.

Here are some additional Tiger numbers: He has won 28% of his professional starts. He has won 29.5% of his starts in majors. And he just won a major title three years in a row for the second time in his career. He really is dominant.

When I read about Jack as a competitor it sounded very much like what I hear about Tiger today: tough mentally, closes the doors on competitors when he's ahead, total concentration, ability to intimidate, and on and on. They both are masters with the irons on the golf course as well.

Now as to whether Tiger is the best of all time, here is what fellow professional Johnny Miller said about him: "You look at Bobby Jones, and what he did was amazing. Then you look at Nicklaus, and that was amazing, too. But when you look at Tiger, there's nothing like it in history."

So here is how I answer the questions. Today he is the #1 active player in golf in the world. And, unless he gets hit by a car or decides to leave the game to spend more time with his family, I believe that when he finishes his golf career he will deserve the title "The Best of All Time." And whether you like Tiger or not, you have to give him is due as a golfer.
