John Daly making another golf comeback
Looking like he is healthy after a 2006 golf season filled with injuries, John Daly, at 41 is making a run at reviving his golf career once again. What makes America love this “go for broke” golfer so much?
I was reading about Daly this morning in the USA Today. And it started me thinking. With all that has happened and all of his problems, many he has admitted are self inflicted, why do American golfers and golf fans still love this guy and pull so hard for him?
I think (and this is just my opinion and we know what that can be worth sometimes) that it is a combination of pulling for the underdog and pulling for someone who may represent all of our struggles, on and off the golf course.
Golf is basically a hard game, unless you are just gifted. And most of us amateur golfers struggle for a lifetime with the game, but love it just the same. And to someone who can play at the level that Daly does and also struggle with the game and with life, makes him more “real” to us amateurs than most of the professional golfers on tour.
I have written about him before and I will say it again. I hope he succeeds and does well. Maybe like some of you, I see a little of me in Daly, and maybe he helps keep hopes and dreams alive.
I think that the popularity of Daly is that he is (or appears to be) the closest to an 'average Joe' of the guys on tour. He drinks, he smokes, divorced how many times, rides a custom motorcycle, is overweight and has a bad haircut. Hell, he looks like the typical guy on a muni on a Saturday afternoon (self included). Some or all of those attributes hit home with us normal guys.
And I mean this all in a positive sense. He seems to be the type of guy you wouldn't mind having a few beers with at the corner tavern.
