More helpful back to basics golf rules

Here are some more of the basic rules of golf to help you improve your golf game and enjoy the game more. Remember it’s not just about the golf clubs and golf lessons.

If your golf ball gets wedged between the flagstick and the cup, but didn’t go in, do you celebrate or give yourself a penalty stroke? Well if you chipped or hit it with your golf club from off the green, simply lift the flagstick and congratulate yourself. However, if you were putting (or attempting any stroke on the green) it’s two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play.
Here’s one that a lot of beginners mess up. You cannot ground your club in a sand trap or a hazard. A lot of golfers ground their golf club in sand traps when addressing the golf ball or make contact with the sand when making a practice swing. A definite no no.
I am continuing these short lessons on golf rules basics based on reader feedback. Thank you to all the golfers who read The Golf Nut. And if you have some good golf tips on the rules, please send them in!

  1. Thanks for the advice! I’m not much of a golfer, but my husband loves
it and is trying to get me more informed on the sport…I don’t know, I
think I’d do better just sipping a margarita at the clubhouse on their teak patio furniture ;)

  2. Thanks for these lessons on golf rules. I just started playing and they really help. I have golf clubs and all the extras but I’m still learning what the basics are.

  3. Keep up the great work on your blog. Best wishes WaltDe
