Phil Mickelson is "officially" changing his golf swing.
Now this is golf news? Phil Mickeson "officially" announced last week that he will be working with golf coach Butch Harmon to work on his golf swing. I didn't know a change to your golf swing required an "official" announcement, but apparently these days it does.
I was fully intending to get back to golf tips and to answering some of the back log of golf questions that I have from you golfers out there. So I apologize and promise to get right back to that right away. But this morning I saw this article in the USA Today about Mickelson and I just had to write about it. I hope you'll bear with me golf nuts!
I love the game of golf. I love writing about it and I really enjoy answering your questions here on The Golf Nut! But I wonder some times if the game is going to get ruined by too much exposure. In this day of 24/7 media coverage of everything, YouTube, camera phones, and videos I tend to feel a little overinformed at times anyway. And when I watch various interviews on ESPN, FoxNews, CNN and see the meda ask stupid questions repeatedly during the same interview when someone has either already answered the question or said that they aren't going to answer that question, I want to scream.
I first wondered to myself, what is up with Mickeson? Does he now think that he is now so important that he must announce everything that he does? I'm changing my golf swing, I am going to dinner at the club tonight, Oh yeah I bought a new golf bag yesterday. No, I don't think that is the case. I don't believe that we are dealing with Phil's ego here.
What I believe that we are dealing with is Phil trying to relieve himself of another thousand dumb questions the next time he plays. SInce he is making some changes to his golf swing, it will be noticed. And you can imagine the volume of questions the next time he is in front of the microphone. So I think that he is just trying to get ahead of the curve a little. Sad to think that he has to do this to avoid getting frustrated and calling someone stupid at a press conference. Actually, I'm sure that Phil wouldn't do that, but I probably would after about the third time. This is really about the sad state of media coverage these days.
And Phil's strategy (if that is what it is) is actually not a bad idea if you think about it. But what will it lead to? So I look at this and start to think about the upcoming announcements we are likely to see..... Stuart Appleby considers wearing green instead of red on Sunday, Tiger Woods really did send his dry cleaning out before the final round yesterday, and so on and so on. Please, I hope that it doesn't get that bad, but we are talking about the media here!
Thank you golf nuts for allowing me this little rant. Next time, on to useful golf information.
