Putting drill to help lower your golf scores

One of the keys to getting up and down, and thus reducing your golf scores, is lag putting. Just getting the golf ball close enough for a gimme putt on the second one is so important. Here is a pretty neat little drill that is simple and easy to do that will help a lot with this.

A buddy of mine showed this to me and I still go back to it every once in a while. It really focuses you on distance control and getting within a good range of the cup for the second putt. All you need is a putter, some golf tees, your golf balls, and a hula hoop. Yes, I did say a hula hoop.
Go to the putting green at your home course with the above items. You might feel a little silly with the hula hoop, but do you want to get better? Then don’t worry about all the other golfers laughing at you right now. Just get ready to take their money on the golf course later.
You want to practice this on 3-4 different holes each time you practice. It’s a very simple golf drill. You start with hole one and do this from different distances for several different holes on the green. Lay the hula hoop around the first hole. Then put 4 tees at the twelve o’clock, three o’clock, six o’clock, and 9 o’clock positions on the outside of the hoop. Pick the hula hoop up and lay it to the side.
Now work on your putting from several sides and several distances, concentrating on just putting the golf ball inside the circle of tees. Line your putt up normally as far as the line to the cup, but for distance just try to get inside the circle.
Stay at one distance until you put at least half of your putts inside the circle from that distance. Move yourself back on distance until you have practiced from the points where you will have practiced most long putts that you would encounter on your home golf course.
As you can see, this putting drill is not a complicated one, but it is really helpful for working on your lag putts. Give it a shot!
