Unusual golf questions from the rules of golf—Part 1

As I continue my series on the rules of golf, I came across some really good questions from visitors to The Golf Nut. I am including some of those here with the answers. I will continue this series like the series on the basic rules of golf.

Question 1—If you hit your golf ball into a out of bounds from the tee, can you elect to go back to the tee and re-tee the ball and hit it from there? According to rule 20-5 if a golfer decides to play the next golf shot from where the previous shot was played, if that place is the tee box the golf ball may be teed up. This is the case regardless if the golf ball went into a water hazard, was lost, went out of bounds or was declared unplayable.
Question 2—If, in executing a drop of one club length for any reason, if the golf ball strikes the golf club after hitting the ground, what is the ruling? There is no penalty stroke in this situation, but the golfer must re-drop.
Question 3—If a caddy hands a golfer the wrong golf club and the golfer hits the shot with that club, can he/she drop a golf ball again and hit from the same spot with no stroke? Unfortunately in golf, there are no do-overs. In a case where the golfer made a mental mistake (didn’t check the golf club after getting it from the caddy), they must live with their golf shot.

There Are 3 Responses So Far. »

  1. A shot from the fairway lands on the green and rolls back or sideways into a water hazard. The point beside the green where the ball crossed the hazard is marked and all points within two clublengths are actually closer to the hole due to the curvature of the pond around the green. Where do you drop the ball? Must you place it on the hazard line where it crossed or do you have to go back to the fairway where you played the shot from?

  2. Question:
A player decides to for what ever reason to Mark his card N.C.R. Is he allowed to continue in the game?
If he has won a pin shot prior to going N.C.R. is he entitled to that pin shot?

  3. Question
Recently our club introduced club competitions (18 holes) over two days with players being able to decide which day they wish to play. The conditions can vary from one day to the next but we are in the same competition no matter what day you play. Last weekend, one of our players was down to play on the second day but went out and had part of a round on the first day. To me this breaks rule 7.1b. What is your ruling on this matter?
