Golfers, who will win the British Open and Why?
Well, we are now at British Open time. The third major for the men's PGA Tour in the States. But more than that, this is the tournament known simply as "The Open Championship". One of the really big golf tournaments of all time. So as we enter the second half of the golfing season, who do you golfers think will win The British Open this time around?
I almost hate to say it because I don't want people to think that my site has become like all the news about golf....only talking Tiger all the time. But I really believe that Tiger will claim his third Claret Jug in a row this coming Sunday. Why, you might ask?
Well, it goes like this. I wrote just a few days ago about the idea that Tiger will be much more focused and motivated now that he is a husband AND a father. See the story at: Better Golfer After Fatherhood? if you haven't read it. I'm not going to beat that dead horse any more.
But here are the other reasons. The golf course hosting The Open Championship this year is Carnoustie, which normally would cause a lot of moaning and groaning among the golfers. And the course is not a pushover this year, but the weather and the greenskeeper have combined to make it much more forgiving than the last time The Open was played here back in 1999. The course will play easier than it did that year when it really rained havoc down on golfers.
Softer fairways and greens, shorter rough, fairways 8-10 yards wider than in '99, primary rough 4-6 inches high instead of knee high all combine to make it not quite the slaughterhouse it was previously. It will still be tough because it's Carnoustie, but I think that it sets the stage for Tiger to dominate the golf tournament.
Which leads to the third reason that I think that he will win it. He has been just thiiiiiiiis close at The Masters and The US Open in 2007. I believe that he is motivated and due to win. Combine these three factors and I think that, whether you are a Tiger fan or not, you will have to applaud his accomplishment. If he wins, he will become the first to win three British Opens in a row since 1956 and only the fourth golfer in history to accomplish this feat.
I can't wait to see what Sunday holds. Golf Nuts, let me who you think will win it.
I look to Michael Campbell to make a run. His golf game has been coming back strong recently and he is a strong international player.
